Acceptable delay in the instant electronic world

Don’t forget this very simple fact: just because information comes at you instantly, you’re not obliged to answer it immediately. You have 24 hours to answer an email, says McBeth-Cooper. “Anything after that is incorrect, and anything earlier is great.” And just because your staff and colleagues have BlackBerries doesn’t mean they’re accessible to you at all times of the day or night. They have lives outside of work – and so should you. Turning off your Business Mode is perfectly acceptable, create business hours for yourself if you can. Cell phones have caller id, after hours I only answer numbers that I know belong to friends and relatives.

Worlds apart

Work should be fun and you should enjoy it, but that doesn’t mean you should not be acting professionally, particularly when it comes to your tech tools. Your cell-phone ring is an expression of yourself, but in the business arena, hearing Eminem when your phone rings is not all that appropriate. If you want to be viewed as Professional, save your funky rings for the weekend.” Text message abbreviations are well and good when communicating with friends on msn, but the LOLs and ROFLMAOs might not be appropriate in emails at the workplace.
