It was a dark and stormy night. It really was…… as I made the long trek last night in to Vancouver to attend the Playhouse Theatre the gods of rain and wind were doing their best to make the night cold, wet, and blustery. I am fortunate to have a friend who often gets comp tickets to plays and invites me to go with her.
The play is Jeffrey Lane’s DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. It is a musical woven around the antics of some sophisticated and some not so sophisticated con artists. When the play opened it seemed a bit flat and I felt the evening might be a waste of time. Within a few minutes that quickly changed and I had a most enjoyable evening. The sets, the lighting, the dancing and the music are all well done. The acting by the leads is very good. Josh Epstein, who plays the role of one of the Scoundrels is outstanding. He will go far in a theatrical career.
For the ladies there is romance and for everyone the evening is peppered with great laughs and intrigue. The humor is adult oriented. It is not coarse but subtle. At times there is a few seconds between the delivery of the line and the audience getting the joke which adds to the fun of the humor. I am still chuckling about some of it this morning.
I do not want to give the play away if you are not familiar with the story except to say; you may not know a con until you see the con. DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS is on at the Vancouver Playhouse until December 27th 2009. If you are looking for a light fun evening with lots of entertainment and great laughs then take your partner or friend or even go alone. The wet trek to get there and back was worth it.
